Nov 18 - 24: It’s World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week! It’s World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week!

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that takes place annually to raise awareness and understanding of the issue of antibiotic resistance.

This year’s theme is: Educate. Advocate. Act now. It is a strong call to action, urging everyone to come together and make a difference!

One of the biggest challenges to public health is antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medications like antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics. As a result, these treatments lose their effectiveness, making it increasingly difficult to prevent and treat infections. This could leave us with fewer options for managing microbial diseases in humans, animals, or even plants, which would make routine surgeries, childbirth, or hospital stays much riskier.

AMR can affect anyone and lead to more severe, prolonged illnesses, or in the worst cases, even death.

The support of everyone is crucial—small actions can make a big difference in curbing AMR. Antimicrobial medications should only be taken when prescribed and always completed as directed. Good hygiene practices, like regular handwashing and vaccinations, are also essential. And antibiotics should never be used as a precaution, especially not for viral infections like colds or the flu, where they are ineffective.

For this year's WAAW, the Microbiology Society has put together an educational piece addressing the seven most common misconceptions about AMR, and we are excited to share it here! So remember: Educate. Advocate. Act now.
